Over the years, I’ve cleaned countless homes filled with family treasures, including beautiful picture frames that hold precious memories. Today, with guidance from my good friends at Mountary Custom Framing, I’m sharing tips on how to keep your picture frames clean and shining—especially the glass. Let’s dive into how to clean picture frame glass without damaging the frame or glass.

Why Clean Your Picture Frames?

Dust is the enemy of your cherished artwork and photos. It not only dulls the appearance of frames but can also build up over time, detracting from your treasures. With a little care, you can ensure your frames protect your artwork and elevate your space for years to come.

Materials Needed

  • Microfiber cloth (at least two: one damp and one dry)
  • Dish soap (for heavier grime)
  • A soft duster (for regular upkeep)

Step-by-Step: Cleaning Your Picture Frame

1. Light Dusting for Maintenance

The easiest way to care for your frames is by dusting them regularly with a soft duster. Focus on the top edges and any ornate details where dust tends to gather.

2. Dealing with Heavy Dust Build-Up

If you’ve missed a few rounds of dusting, no worries! Use a damp microfiber cloth to gently clean the frame. Unless absolutely necessary, leave the frame on the wall to avoid the risk of dropping or damaging it.

Cleaning the Glass: Regular vs. Plexiglass/Acrylic

Regular Glass

  • Regular glass is sturdy and less prone to scratching but can crack if mishandled.
  • Use a damp microfiber cloth to wipe the glass clean.
  • Follow up with a dry microfiber cloth to eliminate streaks.
  • Inspect the glass from different angles to ensure it’s streak-free.

Plexiglass/Acrylic

  • Plexiglass is a popular choice for larger frames due to its lightweight nature but is more susceptible to scratches.
  • Use a damp microfiber cloth to clean the surface. For stubborn dirt, add a drop of dish soap to the water.
  • Always dry with a microfiber cloth to prevent streaks and protect against scratches.
  • Avoid using paper towels or harsh cloths that can scratch the surface.

Alright amigos, there you have it! Now that we’ve tackled the cleaning, let’s take a moment to appreciate the cherished memories we have framed. Keeping your frames clean not only preserves those memories but also keeps your home looking its best. ¡Hasta luego!
